Massive research funds from government for solar and wind energy innovation (including e.g. solar collecting road surfaces and roofing materials rather than separate panels – this is mostly a matter of prioritizing expenditure. This also applies to battery research, which should not be left to the private sector. The idea of car batteries giving back to the grid is a typical example of diversifying the utility of expensive assets.
